The Passion and the Romance

Turning our Values into Value

We cannot underscore enough the centrality of sacrifice as constitutive of any human business. No sacrifice, no business. Take away sacrifice, and there is no relationship at all, be it professional or personal. Our actions end up de-humanized.

No wonder then that these brave spirits come across as passionate individuals. Again, passion comes from another Latin word “passio” which means pain. Passionate people have gladly cut off their fingers counting the sacrifices they extend to others.

Passionate people are veterans to the sacrifices of life. They have tasted the fires, and have emerged purified. Inspiring people that dot the human landscape are not spared the pains of life. Their spirits emerge stripped of the superficial trimmings of life. The pains serve to articulate the deeper meaning of their lives. They have found a reason to live, are decided to pursue their purpose, and they know that they are doing just that. The passion of life is the focused energy of meaning.

Passionate people sharpened their fortitude for life. Sans the pickiness of the dilettante, they welcome everything life may throw their way. Thus, there is the deepening sense of continuity about the interesting quilt of their own lives; there seems to be a connection between and among the different experiences they encounter. Knowing how to place everything in the tapestry of their lives, they possess a sense of personal wholeness. Their eyes may flow with tears but their hearts remain open to the mysteries of life itself. This in turn creates a deep sense of personal integrity. Knowing that they do not have to deny certain things in their lives, they unmistakably grow in the appreciation of their life journey. Thus, passionate people are characterized by that abiding sense of integrity or their unwillingness to break away from their personal values sharpened and honed throughout life.

These are the inspiring people around.

Passionate men and women stand up to us as epitomes of love for life. We cannot ignore them. They touch our inner longings; we see in them the fulfillment of our personal empty spaces. At the end of the day, their passion for life infects our lives like a virus that make us literally “crazy” about our own journeys. The beauty of their lives is devoured by the empty spirits of ordinary mortals. They have ceased to live for themselves. Their lives ignite our lives.

And allow me to add, we don’t have to be savants, we don’t have to be rich, we don’t have to be glamorous, we don’t have to be the biggest and the smartest to become unto others inspiring passionate people.

As well, we cannot pretend to be inspiring leaders nor walk around as dependable team members if we do not carry hearts impassioned for sacrifice. That is non-negotiable.

Business is a romantic affair.

Try to remember a person who has touched you positively in life, someone whom you remember with fondness. This is the one person you won’t think twice to give yourself to. Such a person could be a parent, your special someone, a mentor, a friend or a colleague perhaps.

Chances are this person ignites the passion in our own hearts because he is possessed with honesty and trustworthiness, a caring heart, commitment, a ready listening ear, respect for people, very encouraging words, a positive and enthusiastic attitude in life, and a ready appreciation for anyone. What we are saying is that people we cherish are those who touch our lives with their values.

The list does not include material resources, academic degrees, honorific titles, nor even giant contributions to humanity. We paint a smile on our faces whenever we remember them because of their personal values, the person they genuinely are, sans the oft-baffling external icing.

These inspiring people have an instinct for that marketing dictum: you are your own first product.
