2. His thoughts
The Passion and the Romance
Turning our Values into Value
We need heroes.
We need inspiring men and women who will champion the journey of the Filipino spirit. And this has not been so urgent as today. There are many of them around. But their spirits languish in pitiable atrophy simply because they trudge alone in their quest. Heroism indeed can be so lonely. The majority of people naturally choose to wait and pick up the crumbs of others’ gallant initiatives. We, quality people can create a work and business environment favorable for heroes to thrive.
Business creates, not only profits, but a human society with shared values. Every business enterprise functions not only as an economic engine; the workplace can truly be the laboratory of our national conscience. And in a networked age of globalization, we must stand pat on our own values and ethics. Business is indeed an open and effective chance to test our native spirits with those of our neighbors and the world.
Understandably, there are no quick fixes. Ready made solutions leave only throbbing hangovers. But we have to make a start… and now. If the workplace appropriates the frontlines of social transformation, then we have a new ballgame here: Quality. We are talking here of something more than values education; quality is the commitment to continually shape and sharpen the Filipino business spirit until such time that we can truly pinpoint the core values of our nation, our nation at work.
And we quality professionals have a date with our destiny as a nation. It is incumbent upon us to ignite a sustained transformation from within every employee, every business manager, every entrepreneur, every seasoned capitalist, every single workplace where the Filipino is engaged in building a quality life for himself and the children of the future. Such flames shall be for us the burning bush of inspiration in the desert search for our identity as a people.
There is something our people have in abundance; it is called hope. It is imperative for us to do everything we can to keep it alive.
I cannot help but ask myself: “what are the four foundational values of the Philippine Society of Quality?” That’s where my journey begins.
Dear quality colleagues and friends, we are on duty, 24/7. Consider it a divine commission.
